RMS Titanic

Dear Diary:

Yesterday marked the 100th anniversary of The Titanic leaving Southampton, England.  On Tuesday, the city commemorated the occasion with a ceremony at the dock, where the ship left on April 10th, 1912. 

The Titanic was built between 1909 and 1911 and was the largest ship at that time.  The ship carried 2,224 passengers, from the very wealthy, to others who were emmigrating to the United States or Canada.   Five days after leaving port, RMS Titanic struck an iceberg south of Newfoundland and over 1500 were lost when the boat sank. 

The ship boasted many new safety features such as water tight compartments but it lacked enough life boats to take all passengers.  It was decided that women and children would be the first to leave the sinking ship, leaving behind men who were passengers and crew members.

Even though it's been a hundred years since the disaster, the Titanic is still the most talked about ship in history.  The story has been kept alive by movies and documentaries, and by this wonderful location in our second world.
