New Year's Resolutions From 2016

Dear Diary:

I'm not really good at keeping New Year's Resolutions so when Strawberry Singh posted her "challenge" list last January, I decided I would try to follow as many of her suggested resolutions as I could.  So yesterday, I had a relaxing day and it was a perfect time to look back at what I had covered.

Here's my tally:

1. TED talks: I visited the site and found so many topics that I would like to explore but I settled on two that I enjoyed listening to. Here is my post.

2. Try a mesh head and wear for 24 hours: This was the first resolution that I did.  It was fun and I was glad I tried a mesh head out.  It was a group gift so I didn't spend any money.  I still haven't bought one but...maybe one of these days.  Here is my trial.

3. Vote:  I live in Canada so our election was in October 2015.  I voted (always do) a bit before the challenge.  The Canadian political results can  be viewed here.

4. Donate or volunteer:  In my first life I always donate to local charities as I feel this is most beneficial to my community, especially food banks and things for children.  In my second life, I donate to various sims so they can keep running and to special events such as Relay for Life.

5. Start a meme:  No.  I didn't do this.

6. Comment:  Over the year, I have left comments on a few blogs that I admire and appreciate.  I haven't done this previous to the challenge so I'm glad I told these people how much I enjoy reading their writing or how I admire their creativity.

7. Reconnect:  I thought this was an excellent resolution.  So many of our friends slip away without us realizing.  I have a long friends list but I only see and talk to a few close people.  My results are here.

8. Explore Second Life:  I try to explore various sims that can be different or those that might be recommended.  One of the prettiest was Patron, mentioned here and one of the friendliest, Crestwick Island, visited here.

9. Give thanks:  No.  I didn't do this directly.  One time, a few years back, I was having trouble with getting rid of a griefer and his "grief"!!!  I finally contacted Guy Linden who managed to get rid of the noise-grating, light-flashing item that had invaded my house.  I thanked him profusely.  He is in charge of land, abandoned or otherwise. And...he does have a fan club you can join.

10. Start a daily mantra:  Meditating has been a part of my life for many years so this was an easy one for me to do.  Here it is.

This past year has gone quickly for me and I'm glad I tried to finish as many of the resolutions as I could.  I wonder if Berry will do another challenge for 2017 (??) Hmmm...better start getting ready now.

Good Night for now.

The Annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Picture 2016

Dear Diary:

I love buying an "ugly" Christmas sweater but I'm not sure why everyone calls it "ugly".  I guess it's because it's usually loud and colourful, very Christmas branded but I really like wearing one in both my worlds.  It makes me smile.

Most years, I can convince my friend Sam to buy a sweater with me and then we take a picture for the album.  This year Sam was very busy and said he couldn't commit to wearing a sweater, let alone shopping for one.  So I coerced Chloe into checking out the stores and then posing with me for the traditional Christmas picture.  Fortunately she was right into it and agreed immediately.

She found a great sweater with various Christmas designs and she certainly picked out a seasonally appropriate one.  I invited her over so we could "do" the pose.

This is definitely going into the album for 2016.

Good Night for now.

A Visit To The SL Christmas Expo

Dear Diary:

I'm continuing my search for Christmas decorations and clothing.  I flew out to the SL Christmas Expo yesterday and had a wonderful day searching the 4 different sims that offered such a diverse array of goods.

There are many items being offered at the Christmas Expo.  You can shop for a whole outfit - from dresses to jewelry - to new furnishings or Christmas decor and get a pet for your house all at the same time.

Of course, after a few hours of walking, I ended up at the bakery where I definitely had my eye on those delicious cupcakes.

When you purchase any items at the Expo, or bid on items for auction, the sponsors make sure that money goes to the support of Relay for Life and the Cancer Society. You not only have great entertainment, lovely scenery, great shopping, but you're contributing to a worthwhile cause.

The SL Christmas Expo is open for one more day so you have time to take in all the sights.

Good Night for now.

Decorating The Christmas Tree

Dear Diary:

Once the calendar turns to December, I start thinking about decorating my house.  Of course one of the first Christmas items I think about is the tree.

In my first world, I put up a tree in every room.  Of course most are small and artificial but in the living room, I have a real tree.  I don't have a "theme" although I admire the ones my friends create.  My tree is an eclectic variety of ornaments collected from grandparents, parents and family.  Each means a lot to me and I add them every year with love and good memories.

Last night, in my second world, I invited my friends over to help decorate my main tree.

The men put on the lights and then stood back admiring their work while Chloe and I started to add the decorations.  It takes a long time just to get everything right but the time goes fast when you have friends to help.

Good Night for now.

My Daily Mantra

Dear Diary:

I meditate often.  I used to do it every day but now I find I can do it whenever I feel I want to, whether I'm at home, on the bus or sitting on the deck.  I have a mantra. A mantra is described as "a word or sound repeated to aid concentration in meditation". This word I use to slow my breathing and get me relaxed but it's private so I can't share that with you.  I also go to a yoga class twice a week that can put me in the "zone".

I also tell myself everyday:
     1. I am strong
     2. I am smart
     3. I am loyal
     4. I believe in me
     5. I never give up
     6. I am confident
     7. I am positive
     8. I am healthy
     9. I learn something new everyday
   10. I am loved

The Beginning Of The Search

Dear Diary:

After posting my last entry, I decided to take some of my own thoughts and venture out for a look at what's coming into the stores for the coming season.  There are a few items I buy every year so I wanted to make sure these were available to add to my Christmas presents.  I need to get certain things early since they have to be mailed away.

Every year I buy an ugly Christmas sweater in my second world.  I think they're innovative and they always seem to get a comment or two from my friends.  I went into one store that I frequent but it seemed to be too early for the sweaters to be out. I stopped and asked the sales representative if she had any idea of when the sweaters would be put on the shelf.  Her reply was, "It shouldn't be too long now.  Keep checking back."  I told her I would since the sign encouraged me to continue on in my search.

Next stop - the decoration area!

Good Night for now.

Thinking That Time Really Does Fly

Dear Diary:

Here it is...the second week in November...next week the middle of the month...and I need to start thinking of the holiday season that's just around the corner.

I usually start thinking about Christmas around this time.  I have quite a few gifts to buy for family and a scant number for some close friends.  I really don't care for the crowds, the pushing and shoving when there's a bargain, or the dents my car often gets in the jam-packed parking lot.  That's all the reason to start early.

Whew!!  Feel so good after venting.  I think I'll start checking off the list tomorrow.

Good Night for now

TED Talks About DNA

Dear Diary:

I've been trying to check off Strawberry Singh's New Year's Resolution list gradually. Well, time IS running out before a new New Year's Resolution comes around so in the next few weeks I'll be trying to whittle the contents down.

One of the challenges was to watch TED talks on any topic of your choice.  What are TED talks?  It has been described as "a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short powerful talks (18 minutes or less).  TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers all topics - from science to business to global issues - in more than 100 languages." (ted.com)  So I checked out the list of subjects and chose the science group.

The first talk I picked was on DNA.

I find this aspect of genetics very interesting.  I've had my DNA tested by a reliable lab and had no surprises when they told me the results.  This talk was informative, as the speaker, Sebastian Kraves, claimed that in the future, most homes will support a DNA testing station.  Fascinating!

I also watched a second program, "You Have No Idea Where Camels Came From" that was also extremely interesting.  Who would have though to look for camels in the Arctic?

It was not only an entertaining evening but I learned a lot too.

Good Night for now.

A Hallowe'en Preview

Dear Diary:

I'm not very big on Hallowe'en.  As a kid, it was fun going "trick n' treating" with my friends.  It was always a big competition to see who could fill a pillowcase first with all kinds of candy.  That was the fun part.

But I never had the imagination or the creativity when making a costume.  My Mom could sew but not without a pattern so I usually dressed as a ghost or witch, two easier things, at least for me...and my Mom.

But my friend Chloe LOVES Hallowe'en so when she told me about some of the scary themes around the grid, I agreed to tag along while she shopped.  I did get caught up with it and we put together a fun Hallowe'en scene.

Hope you have a scary Hallowe'en night (with a pillowcase full of candy, of course)!

We're The Same...But Different

Dear Diary:

I love shopping!  But more than that, I love a good sale.  When I saw Murray was having a 50% off sale, I called Chloe up and said, "Put your sneakers on.  We're going to do a marathon!"

I had my eye on this coat for a long time.  I tried it on...tried it on again...and then got Chloe to try it on.  We both liked the versatility it provided along with great colour choices.  When I told her about the reduced price, we both just had to buy it.

Chloe is a "dress-up" girly girl so she chose the longer version with matching purse while I chose the short version.  The HUD gives you a choice of showing the buttons (as on Chloe's pockets), and choosing belt metal colours with bling or not.  (Guess who chose the bling??)  The coat also comes in a medium length.  There are a variety of colours from soft tones to brighter selections.  It is a super buy for both of us.

Murray is also offering sales on accessories and hair, at the mainstore and on Marketplace until October 23rd.

Good Night for now.

Get Rid Of The Jeans! Time To Look Classy

Dear Diary:

The other night I felt like getting "fancied up" and flying off to some exotic place for a quiet drink.  I had to do a bit of shopping first, since I'm more of a casual girl at heart so I needed something classy to put on. But I knew I wouldn't have any problem finding things to spend my lindens on.

The shopping went well and I had no trouble finding a dress that made me feel spectacular, along with shoes and jewelry.  Oh Yeah!  Love it when everything comes together without really trying!

I found this wonderful spot that was just what I was looking for.  The sim, Patron, was extraordinary with so many things to look at.  I spent hours looking around but my focus was finding a secluded spot for a sparkling drink.  I finally found an area with a comfortable chair, great ambiance and a very attentive butler.  My drink was cool and colourful.

I certainly intend on visiting Patron again.  Breathtaking!

Happy Thanksgiving In Canada

Dear Diary:

It's time to celebrate Thanksgiving in my part of the world on Monday, October 10th.
I love the smell of the turkey cooking in the oven; the anticipation of mouth watering desserts; and the swooping entrance of family and friends who all are eager to join in.

As in my first world, I invite some close friends to help me celebrate in my second world.  It's usually the three of us - Chloe, Sam and myself - but this year, Chloe asked if she could bring a new friend, Quincy who is new to our second world.  "Of course!" I said.  "The more the merrier."

We all agreed that we are so thankful for good friends, plenty of food and peace in our country.  We wish that for everyone no matter where they live.

Happy Thanksgiving Canada!

Good Night for now.

Admiring The Beauty Of Autumn

Dear Diary:

This is my favourite time of year!  The mornings are cool but by the afternoon it has warmed up to a pleasant temperature.  Yes, you probably need a light sweater but no heavy jackets yet.  It's Indian Summer in my part of the world and there is nothing I like to do better than walk out into the countryside to enjoy the changing scenery.

The leaves in my world are changing every day - from green to lime; from green to yellow; and from green to red.  It's a sensory delight!

It's incredible walking in the woods early in the day, finding a peaceful spot to stop and drink a cup of coffee while reading the morning paper.  What a wonderful space to sit and relax.

My Second Job In My First World

Dear Diary:

In addition to my regular "pays-in-first-world" job, I take on a position of sessional lecture at a local post secondary institute.  It gets me out of an environment where I only work with a couple of people everday. Suddenly I'm thrown into a room where I deal with over 60.  I enjoy the teaching very much and working with students is very rewarding...ummm...and frustrating at the same time.

I do teach a subject that I deal with in my job so I do know a lot about that but sometimes a student will ask me something beyond my realm of knowledge.  That's so good!  It does show they're enthusiastic about the subject but more than that, it stimulates my brain and keeps me current.

I admire anyone who goes into the education profession.  It's a tough job.

The Second (Almost) Annual UnEVENTful Challenge

Dear Diary:

Yesterday I was reading a blog by PeepSideshow Darkward, called "Pics by Peep".  It's informative, current and she takes great pictures.  She is again proposing "The Second (Almost) Annual UnEVENTful Challenge".  The Challenge is to take a picture of yourself, not wearing anything that was purchased at an event.  I thought this was a tremendous idea!

Now don't get me wrong.  I love events and I manage to go to a lot of them...and spend many $$.  When one works full time, has responsibilities and needs sleep, it's not easy to check out all the stores on the grid so if different items are central it makes it a lot easier.  When I fly into an event, I can easily see what's trendy in clothes, shoes and hair while often checking on decor and landscaping at the same time. However, getting into the venue is always a problem and sometimes they're so large that I lose interest.  I always prefer going to the store and purchasing there.  So I was up for the Challenge.

Everything I have on was purchased in a store, not at an event. Some of the items were older but I flew back to each store and so far all items are still available.

This was an interesting test for everyone to try.  Check out Peep's Challenge.
